Independence and War
- David Ben-Gurion and other Jewish leaders declared the birth of the first democratic State of Israel on May 14, 1948 while the British were leaving Palestine
- Ben-Gurion became Israel’s first prime minister
- The day after Israel declared its independence, armies from the Arab countries of Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Trans-Jordan, and Iraq invaded Israel, launching the first Arab-Israeli war
- War from 1967 to 1973. Peace agreement after 6 years
- No Arab state made because land captured by other countries; tension remains
- 1967, Egypt wants troops in Gaza gone and moves troops to block an Israeli route, Israel launches pre emptive attack
- Six- Day War: Israel won; took control of the Golan Heights, Gaza Strip, and land of the West Bank
- Yom Kippur War (1973) : surprise attack by Egypt and Syria to regain land from Israel, on jewish holy day; eventually got a cease fire.
- Camp David Accords signed by Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin in 1977 with Egypt recognizing Israel and getting peninsula.
- Palestinian Arabs continue in struggle for nationhood
- Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) formed pledge to destroy Israel to get Palestinian state (nationalism); begins attacks
- Israel invades Lebanon (1978 and 1982) to stop attacks; begins settling in West Bank and Gaza; rising tensions between people
- intifada (rebellion) with Israeli troops vs Palestinian people (street violence) (1990)
- Oslo Accords in 1993 to end violence
- Israel gradually gives over West Bank and Gaza
- permanent agreement between PLO and Israel in 1998.
